How it works
There are 2 principal components to the Hot English Method: Hot English monthly magazine and the Skills Booklets. They are both linked, unit by unit, in terms of grammar, vocabulary and language thus ensuring that continuous detailed classes are given allowing numerous opportunities for the students to recycle key vocabulary and structures.
Hot English Magazine provides the students with essential Reading and Listening activities. The magazine is divided into levels so teachers can give your students the type of material that they need. The Skills Booklets provide structure, a syllabus and essential language and speaking activities. They allow material introduced in the magazine to be further developed. There are currently four Skills Booklet levels: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced, so your students will get the right material they need for their level in order to progress.
Teachers really appreciate that with very little planning they are able to give more detailed, continuous and structured classes.

The two products are linked to ensure continuity. Let’s show you how. In this example you can see a Pre-Intermediate Reading activity that is linked in with Unit 5 of the Pre-Intermediate Skills Booklet. Notice how the topic, Shopping, is linked, and also the Grammar (the Past Simple).
In this example, you can see an Upper Intermediate Listening activity that is linked in with Unit 6 of the Intermediate Skills Booklet. Notice how the topic is linked (Office Problems) and the Grammar (Modal Verbs).
Teachers of the method must do the obligatory Reading and Listening activities for each level. These are clearly indicated in the index of each magazine on page 3 of hot English magazine However, apart from that, there are many other sections in the magazine that they can use in class. The magazine is very popular with students and it provides a number of advantages:
Every month, Hot English teachers ensure that their students complete:
- One Reading activity (from Hot English magazine) – titled “Skills Booklet Reading”.
- One Listening activity (from Hot English magazine) – titled “Skills Booklet Listening”.
- Two units* of the Skills Booklets
* Depending on how many hours of class there are.
This course is designed to be done by students doing 2 to 3 hours per week. However, if your students do only one hour a week, you simply do one unit of the Skills Booklet per month rather than two.
For teachers, there are ready-to-go lessons with all the structure and lesson planning done for them. They look prepared and they’re going to give great lessons with just a little bit of planning, which mostly involves reading over the material before the class and making sure they understand what they’re doing. Plus, the course has sufficient flexibility for them to add a touch of their own charm and brilliance to make the course truly shine. All this means that teacher preparation time and photocopying will be cut down – we are, in effect, providing teachers with more than 2,000 hours of lesson plans.
The Skills Booklets are given to students at the start of the academic year or when they start the course. Every student receives a booklet that corresponds to their level. Students also receive a copy of Hot English magazine every month (with or without CD, or with access to the MP3 audio files on our website).
Every teacher receives a special teacher’s version of the Skills Booklets (the Teacher’s Guide) packed with ideas, teaching tips and ideas on how to use the Skills Booklets in class. Teachers also get a copy of Hot English magazine with an audio CD every month, plus the monthly Teacher’s Notes, which is packed with ideas on how best to exploit the material in Hot English Magazine.
Exams
There are two exams over the course of the academic year: The Mid-Term Progress Test and the End-of-Term Progress Tests. All Hot English Method licensees will have access to these. See an example exam here (right click and "save target as...").
