Thorley Russell (managing director)
Thorley Russell was the initial driving force behind the magazine's creation. After identifying a clear gap in the TEFL market, he was inspired to launch a magazine with a difference: English presented in a fun way with material based on real English. Since the first edition of Hot English Magazine in March 2001, Thorley has overseen the impressive growth of the company and its expansion into related areas, making the transition from a one-magazine publishing company to a nationally-recognised language learning enterprise involved in a wide variety of sectors.
Prior to coming to Madrid, Thorley worked in the highly-competitive London recruitment industry, where he was promoted on various occasions, eventually heading up the newly-formed Hays Senior finance department. Thorley Russell has a business and finance honours degree from Plymouth University and is fluent in Spanish. He is TEFL-qualified, with TEFL teacher experience in London, Slovakia and Spain.
Andrew Coney (editorial director)
Andrew Coney is a founding member of the company Hot English Publishing, and has been the editor of Hot English Magazine since its launch in 2001. His enthusiasm for language learning and teaching has seen him write, edit and put together dozens of course books, magazines and language-learning products over the past years. A graduate of London University (Modern History), he also has a PGCE from Bristol University in history for secondary school students, and an MSc from Aston University in teaching English as a second language.
With more than 12 years teaching experience with all age groups in England, Hong Kong and Spain, plus experience as a teacher trainer, writer and speaker, he has a number of published books which are currently on sale all over Spain. These include (among others) English Grammar, The English Verb, Easy English, Phrasal Verbs and The Concise English Spanish Dictionary.
James Blick (assistant editor)
James began his professional career as a lawyer, then wrote and directed a couple of award-winning short films and commercials and finally settled on the written word as his true calling. As well as working for Hot English, he is a Madrid-based freelance writer, focusing on travel, film and food. You can read his work here www.jamesblick.com.
James' role in the company is varied and involves writing, editing, making videos and looking after the website.
